Also helps reduce strain on your dog's back and neck, especially at the trachea. To determine correct size, measure dog snugly around the ribcage, close to the elbow, then add 10% extra for comfort. Ideally, the girth will sit close to the front legs so that it is supported by the ribcage, rather than the dog's abdomen.
